Tree Fruit Fertilization

Introduction

In order to arrive at a specific fertilizer program for tree fruits, a consultation with a Horticulture Specialist or Agricultural Representative is highly recommended. She/he can give you a specific fertilizer and/or foliar spray recommendation based on your soil test report.

The following can, however, serve as a rough guide; particularly for home gardeners and those who have only a very small orchard.

Young Trees (10 years or less)

Use 10-10-10 + 0.1 B fertilizer and apply, evenly around each tree, out a couple of feet beyond the branches. Apply 225 g (0.5 lbs.) to each tree one month after initial planting. Increase the application each year thereafter by 225 g (0.5 lbs.) per year. If 10-10-10 fertilizer containing 0.1% B can not be purchased, mix 100 grams (3.5 oz) of Solubor with each 10 kilograms (22 lbs.) of 10-10-10 fertilizer to be used.

Mature Trees (over 10 years)

Use 10-10-10 + 0.1 B fertilizer at a rate of 15 lb/1000 sq. ft. every third year. In other years, use 33-0- 0 at 5 lb/1000 sq. ft. This fertilizer should be broadcast over the entire orchard area at the stated rates.
