Potato Disinfection Program

To provide disinfection services designed to assist in the control and eradication of Bacterial Ring Rot within the Province.
ASSISTANCE PROVIDED:The P.E.I. Department of Agriculture will administer the following disinfection services:
Trucks: The department will maintain a stationary facility to disinfect transport trucks at the Borden location - year round. Mobile service units will be available to disinfect transport trucks where it is not possible for the trucks to be serviced at any permanent location. A disinfection fee of $10 plus GST is charged for each truck hauling potatoes to markets off Prince Edward Island. The trucker must provide proof of disinfection at the exit point when leaving the province.
Mobile Service Units: The department will maintain mobile service units to respond to requests for disinfection services. The following order of priority will determine the order in which requests are responded to:
- Bacterial Ring Rot decontaminations
- Transport Truck disinfections
- Complete "Farm Clean Ups" in preparation for entry into seed certification.
- Other routine requests for on farm disinfection (preventative)
- Assist (when time permits) with the disinfection of pallets at export wharves.
- Other requests for potato related disinfection.
Transport trucks hauling potatoes for export requiring mobile services and all disinfection services delivered to producers after normal working hours are charged the disinfection fee of $10 plus GST.
ELIGIBILITY:All sectors of the P.E.I. potato industry are eligible for Disinfection Services.
GUIDELINES:
- It is the responsibility of the grower to ensure that all storages and equipment have been thoroughly cleaned prior to the arrival of the disinfection unit.
- It is the responsibility of potato transport drivers to ensure that all debris has been removed from the vehicle. Proof of disinfection will be issued to vehicle drivers upon completion of disinfection. Certificates must be surrendered at the Highway Scale House (Albany/Wood Islands) upon exiting the province.
- Disinfection Employees are authorized to refuse disinfection if in the opinion of the employee, storages and transports have not been adequately prepared.
- The grower or the grower's representative shall sign a form stating that disinfection is complete and satisfactory.
