Birch Sawfly

Description:
  • larvae - pale yellowish green body with several rows of black spots, dull orange colored head
  • adult - 20mm to 26mm long, fully grown shiny black head, yellowish green body
  • adult female has a saw-like appendage for inserting eggs into leaves
  • S shaped stance around leaf edge when not eating or frightened

What it attacks:

  • all birch species, some alder, some willow

Damage:

  • defoliates trees

Prevention/Control:

  • easily knocked off tree in groups
  • pick off tree by hand
  • safers soap
