Fall Webworm
Description:
- larvae - hairy, yellow or green, lines of black spots down back
- adult moths - white to brown spotted wings
- wing spread 38mm
What it attacks:
- ash, elm, birch, cherry, roses, wisteria, maple, linden
Damage:
- larvae skeletonize leaves
- larvae colony produces webs over leaves, in particular at the ends of branches
Prevention/Control:
- prune out nests at dawn or dusk when the insect generally migrates back to the web/nest
- clean up leaf litter in the fall (pupae overwinter in litter & in soil)
- B.t.
- safers soap
- attract birds & bats (bat houses)
- attract beneficial insects (see Beneficial Insects & Others)
