Fall Webworm

Description:

  • larvae - hairy, yellow or green, lines of black spots down back
  • adult moths - white to brown spotted wings
  • wing spread 38mm

What it attacks:

  • ash, elm, birch, cherry, roses, wisteria, maple, linden

Damage:

  • larvae skeletonize leaves
  • larvae colony produces webs over leaves, in particular at the ends of branches

Prevention/Control:

  • prune out nests at dawn or dusk when the insect generally migrates back to the web/nest
  • clean up leaf litter in the fall (pupae overwinter in litter & in soil)
  • B.t.

  • attract birds & bats (bat houses)
  • attract beneficial insects (see Beneficial Insects & Others)
