Viburnum Leaf Beetle

Description:

  • eggs - in twigs covered by black excrement cap
  • larvae - yellowish with black spots on the back
  • found underneath the leaf, towards the tips of the leaf
  • adult - beetle

What it attacks:

  • snowball bush, cranberry, viburnum

Damage:

  • both larvae & adults eat leaves
  • leaves look tattered at first, then everything stripped except midrib & main veins

Prevention/Control:
  • trim out previous years growth in the fall or spring- twigs look knobby because of egg masses
  • pick off larvae & adults
  • attract beneficial insects (see Beneficial Insects & Others)
  • safers soap

Insect Seen When...:

  • Bleeding Heart is in full bloom
  • the first Trillium begin to bloom
  • Marsh marigolds in full bloom
  • Serviceberry flowers have developed but not opened
