NSAC Endorsement

NSAC Proud Supporter of the P.E.I. Agriculture Certificate Program

The Agriculture Certificate Program is a 3 year high school program offered at Kinkora, Westisle and Kensington which students apply for at the end of Gr. 9. Students go through a formal interview process and, if accepted, enter the program in September of Gr. 10. Students enrolled in the program gain a specialization in agriculture. Upon graduation, students receive a recognized Agriculture Certificate as well as preferred standing and scholarship opportunities at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.

In December 2008, the N.S.A.C. voted to renew their endorsement of the Agriculture Certificate Program. The endorsement includes the following provisions:

Because the university wishes to encourage the graduates of the Agriculture Certificate Program to continue their agricultural studies at N.S.A.C., the University will offer one $500 prize to an outstanding Ag. Cert. Program student from each of the three Island high schools that that offer the program, and who are planning on attending N.S.A.C. The President of N.S.A.C., or a designate, will attend the high school graduation ceremonies to present certificates and prizes to the students.

Students entering the Bachelor of Science (Agr.), the Bachelor of Technology in Environmental Horticulture and Bachelor of Technology in Applied Science Degree Programs will be granted one elective (with an A designation).

Students entering the Environmental Horticulture Technology Program will be given credit for one of the two free electives.

Students entering the Plant Science Technology Program will be given credit for one of the electives.

Successful candidates to the Veterinary Technology Program will be given credit for one elective course.

With the Diploma in Enterprise Management, Farming students will be given credit for one of the electives. In addition, of the 400 hours of required Farming Internship hours, Agriculture Certificate Program students can be awarded up to 240 hours of Internship hours based on their work experience as approved by the Program Advisor. Credit for W.H.M.I.S. and First Aid will also be given upon presentation of certificates.

Greenhouse and Nursery students will be given credit for one elective and W.H.M.I.S. and First Aid with the presentation of certificates. Dairy, Companion Animal and Equine students will be given credit for W.H.M.I.S. and First Aid upon presentation of certificates.

The first group of Ag. Cert. Program students at K.R.H.S. graduated from the program in 2003 and they have had a total of 60 students graduate in total, not including this year's nine (2011). Of these 60 students, 46 pursued post-secondary education (8 at N.S.A.C.). Agriculture continues to play an integral role in the lives of at least 44 of the 60. This year's K.R.H.S. Ag. Cert. Program graduates include: Janice Arsenault, Adam Avery, Cody Carmichael, Brandi Dawson, Taylor Drummond, Aaron Kelly, Bernadette Lawless, Julia Noonan, Richard Rogers & Catherine Wood.

A very exciting year for Westisle as this is their third year of the Ag. Cert. Program, thus, their first group of grads.

Kensington is also pleased to have eleven grads this year: Matthew Carr, Emma Cole, Gavin Cousins, Evan Donald, Jillian Doucette, Andrew MacEwen, Jonny Paynter, Mitchell Peters, Derek Profit, Matthew Waugh and Shelby Woodside.

Two of the K.I.S.H. students have been accepted into the Bachelor of Engineering degree program at N.S.A.C.  Andrew MacEwen has acccepted one of the five Atlantic Scholars Awards valued at $38,000 over the four years ($9500 per year). Derek Profit has accepted a Residence Scholarhisp valued at $4050 and   Derek will also recieve an entrance scholarship of $1000 dollars for maintaining academic excellence in high school.
