You can place a wildcard character -- the asterisk * -- anywhere within your search terms to broaden your
search. Where you place the wildcards can have a profound effect on your search results. For example, if
you wanted to search the database for the surname "MacNeil" but are unsure how the clergymen recorded the
name as "Mac" or "Mc", you may use the asterisk to retrieve both variations. You may enter your search
term as "M*cNeil" which would locate all instances of the names recorded as "MacNeil" or "McNeil".

|
If you wish, you can place more than one asterisk in the search term. If you wish to broaden the earlier
example to return all variations of the surname "MacNeil" in the search results, you would replace
the "a" in "Mac" with an asterisk and add an asterisk to the end of "Neil" to allow for the possibility
of there being a second "l" at the end of the name. Thus you would locate the four possible variations
of the name - "MacNeil", "MacNeill", McNeil", and "McNeill". Feel free to experiment with this powerful
search tool in all the search fields.
