About the PARO Collections Database

The PARO Collections Database is an item-level database containing thousands of records from some of our most popular collections, including vital statistics, census records, and archival material such as photographs, maps, architectural plans, and textual items.  Where available, a digital scan of the original can also be accessed through the database.

Please be advised that records and images obtained through the PARO Collections Database are for research and private study.  Users are requested to contact us for any other use.

New records and digital images will be added to the database on a regular basis so please check back often.

Searching the PARO Collections Database

You can search the PARO Collections Database using the “Standard Search” or “Advance Search”.  Keyword, name, date, and accession number searching are all available.

Users should be advised that spelling of names was not standardized in the 18th and 19th centuries.  When searching for an individual, try variations of spellings, nicknames, or in the case of given names, second or third possible names as well as initials.  For examples of common abbreviations and nicknames for given names, please click here

Users are encouraged to use the wildcard “*” within search terms to broaden search results and account for spelling variations in names.  For instance, a search for “m*cneil*” will retrieve “MacNeil”, “McNeil”, “MacNeill”, and “McNeill” results.  You can also use the wildcard to separate multiple search terms when doing a keyword search (eg. “charlottetown*park”) or to search a date range (eg. “191*”).

The PARO Collections Database does not contain all records held by the Public Archives.  If you are unable to locate the information for which you are searching, please try searching our finding aids through Archives PEI or contact us.

Getting Copies

We can provide photocopies of many of the records found in the PARO Collections Database.  There is a minimum mailout fee of $5.00 CND plus taxes (where applicable).  Users are asked to contact us with specific requests.  Where possible, please have all pertinent information relating to the request (eg. type of record, name of individual, dates, source information, etc.) available prior to making your inquiry.  Information can be copied and pasted directly from the database into an email inquiry if desired.  Please be advised that copies of original records cannot be provided in all cases.

Images are provided through the database for research and private study only.  Users who wish to use the material for any other purpose or those who wish to acquire high-quality digital files are asked to contact us for more information.  Digital files can be provided at a cost of $5.00 or $10.00 per image.  The Public Archives does not charge use fees.

For more information about our copying service, please see “Copying of Archival Materials”.
