Other Sources to Consult
Locating Other Petitions
The records contained in the Prince Edward Island Petition Index refer only to petitions found in the Executive Council fonds (Record Group 5, Series 4). This is not a complete collection of petitions, as it is likely that many petitions were misplaced or sent to other offices for further consideration. Below is a list of some other collections which contain petitions not indexed in the PEI Petition Index. Click on the hyperlinks to view the collection descriptions and available item listings.

Government Records

The Lieutenant Governor correspondence files (Record Group 1, Series 4, Subseries 2) contain several petitions arranged chronologically by year for the period 1790 to 1947.

The House of Assembly fonds (Record Group 3, Series 5) contains twenty-two files of petitions from individuals and groups requesting a wide variety of services and assistance. The records date from 1805 to 1879.

The Legislative Assembly fonds (Record Group 4) contains some later petitions dating from 1912 to1913 and 1940 to 1950.

The Commissioner of Crown and Public Lands papers (Record Group 15, Series 11) include several petitions and reports of petitions to the Executive Council, most relating to land values which had been assessed by the Commissioners. These records cover the period 1864 to 1896.

As petitions regarding controversial matters were forwarded to the colonial authorities in London, England, the Colonial Office correspondence records (CO 266 - available on microfilm) are another source of petition information.

Private Collections

The Smith Alley collection (Accession 2702) contains a number of petitions related to a wide variety of requests, including land grants, Loyalists, payment of services, criminal cases, and the building of roads.

The Ira W. Brown collection (Accession 2810) contains several petitions for the period 1787 to 1838. An item listing is available in the Public Archives and Records Office reading room.

Supporting Documentation
In several cases, the petitions included in this database are accompanied by supporting documentation. Users may also be able to locate further information through other series in the Executive Council (Record Group 5) records. Series which may be of interest include:
- Series 1: Minutes and Orders-in-Council
- Series 3: Agenda Books
- Series 5: Warrants of Survey and Reports
- Series 6: Licenses of Occupation
These records are not indexed or accessible through this website, however they are available for consultation at the Public Archives and Records Office.
