A Christmas Message from Emily of New Moon
December 25, 1898

Dear Father on the Road to Heaven,

Oh, Father, it's Christmas morning and never before has the earth looked
so perfect. New Moon has been absolutely blinded by a resplendent flurry

of golden snow crystals. It has piled so high that I can hardly see out
the garret window. I remember when you told me that no two snowflakes
are the same, just like people. Whenever I see snow, I think of you.
I truly wish you and mother were here with me today so we could enjoy
Christmas as a family one more time. I would be desperately alone if not
for my new friends and family. Cousin Jimmy has promised to take Ilse,
Teddy, Perry, me and some of the other children on a sleigh ride. Every
day must be Christmas for Cousin Jimmy because he's always so generous
and kind. Can you believe, even Aunt Elizabeth has offered to make hot
chocolate for all of us? I wonder if she'll let me dip my toast into it.

Last night she firmly stated that she would not take part in any sleigh
ride but secretly I think she wants to go. I could see Aunt Laura hiding
a smile as Aunt Elizabeth made a big fuss about not going, how she would
have to stay in bed for ten days to get rid of the chill. I blurted out
that we all should stay in bed for ten days and eat cake. Well, that
ruffled Aunt Elizabeth's feathers so much so she had to leave the room.
I think she still has nightmares of when she had to share her bed with
me! I still don't think I'm that restless.

There is a peaceful feeling in the air at New Moon today. Christmas
brings out the best in everyone around here. I wonder what people in
India are doing? Or China? Or Egypt? Do they celebrate Christmas? Jenny
Strang says everybody does but everybody knows that she is a fathead. I
wonder what they do in heaven on Christmas day. It must be like every
other day' pure bliss!

I have to go quickly because breakfast is ready. I love you, Father.

Love,
Emily Byrd Starr

P.S. Ilse and I have planned to make the world's best snow "woman." We
both agree that there are too many snow "men" around. What do you think?
