Youth Forum Online Registration
Youth on the Coast invites participation of a culturally diverse group of up to 50 young people ages 16 to 26 to spend time on the small island province of Prince Edward Island learning about coastal issues, sharing skills and perspectives and creating a series of video messages and a call to action for the CZC 2010 conference that will follow. The goals of the Youth on the Coast forum are:
- To educate participants on ecological, social and economic coastal issues (including climate change; water quality; youth unemployment and out-migration).
- To develop an appreciation for the importance of healthy coastal communities to Canada's culture, economy, food security and environment.
- To explore the implications of climate change impacts such as sea level rise on Atlantic Canadian communities; both Aboriginal and non-native.
- To examine the role of Aboriginal peoples and community based organizations in the management and conservation of coastal resources.
- To raise awareness of the livelihood options for youth in the coastal zone; recognize the advantages of being rural/remote; and inspire young people to look for opportunities to get engaged in coastal issues.
- To raise awareness that working on coastal issues does not only mean being a fisher, farmer, engineer or biologist; that there are many opportunities to revitalize coastal communities and tackle environmental and social issues through arts and culture; creative community development; and social enterprise.
- To facilitate development of video messages that will bring the collective concerns and vision of young people into the plenary sessions of the Coastal Zone Canada 2010 conference.
