About our Diversity and Equity Policy

The amendments to the Civil Service Act in 1998 identified the need to foster the development of a public service that is representative of the Province's diversity.

  • Purpose of the Policy: The purpose of this policy is to support an innovative and inclusive workforce which, at all levels, is representative of the diverse population it serves, which recognizes, respects, and accommodates "diversity of individuals" as a basic human right and makes use of the full range of talents and perspectives available to the business of government.

  • Objectives of the Policy: This policy will guide departments and agencies in removing barriers faced by designated groups and ensure equality of treatment within the civil service. It will help to raise the understanding and awareness that individual differences contribute to the overall value of the public sector workplace.

  • Diversity and Equity Policy Benefits

    • Improved client service: There are currently Islanders from 78 different cultures residing here on PEI. A diverse workforce enhances an organization's ability to understand the public it serves and to meet the needs of all its clients.
    • Investments in the future PEI labour force: The 1999 PEI Population Strategy Report identifies the need of immigration promotion initiatives. Organizations can prepare for the future labour force by integrating qualified designated members into their workforce now.
    • Innovative program design and marketing: Tapping into the differences of our employees, enables organizations to become more innovative and effective in customizing programs and services for the diverse clients it serves.
