Summary of Board Decisions on Zoning and Programming Changes

At a special public board meeting held April 3, 2017, the Public Schools Branch Board of Directors made their decisions on the recommendations from the Category II Study for the review of schools in six families of schools.  The Board has authorized a number of zoning and programming changes.  These decisions are final and implementation efforts have started.  The Board decisions on school closures required Cabinet approval and Cabinet has decided not to close any schools.

Charlottetown Families of Schools

  • The Charlottetown Rural and Colonel Gray families will be consolidated into one family of schools.
  • The Glen Stewart/Donagh dual zone will be eliminated and added to the Donagh zone.
  • The West Kent/St. Jean dual zone will be eliminated and merged with the West Kent zone.
  • The West Kent/West Royalty dual zone will be eliminated and merged with the Spring Park zone.
  • West Kent will become a dual track school, offering both English and Early French Immersion programs. West Royalty will remain a single track school, offering English programs only.
  • Intermediate students from the Glen Stewart/Stratford zone will be added to the Birchwood Intermediate zone.
  • The Stonepark zone will be reduced by removing the Glen Stewart/Stratford zone. Students from Hillsborough Development and Hillsborough Village will be removed from the Birchwood zone and added to the Stonepark zone. Students from the Parkdale zone will be removed from the Birchwood Intermediate zone and added to the Stonepark Intermediate zone.
  • Students from the St. Jean (downtown) zone will attend Queen Charlotte Intermediate for Grade 7-9.
  • The Public Schools Branch is directed to conduct a review of the Charlottetown Rural and Colonel Gray school attendance zones.

Additional:

  • The Board of Directors recommends to the Minister of Education, Early Learning and Culture that the Department take action to add additional school infrastructure in the Stratford area.
  • The Board of Directors recommends to the Minister of Education, Early Learning and Culture that the Department take action to add additional space and improve school infrastructure in the L.M. Montgomery/Sherwood/West Royalty area.

Kinkora Family of Schools Decisions

  • No change

 Morell Family of Schools Decisions

  • No change

Additional:

  • The Board directed the Public Schools Branch Director to conduct a review of the Morell Regional High School and explore the feasibility of reconfiguring the school to accommodate grades 7-12.

Montague Family of Schools Decisions

  • Late French Immersion will be added at Montague Intermediate in 2018, pending sufficient enrolment.

Additional:

  • The communities of Annandale and Little Pond and the area east of the Annandale Road and the Annandale Wharf Road intersection and civic addresses on the Annandale Wharf Road will be removed from the Cardigan zone and added to the Souris Regional zone.

Westisle Family of Schools Decisions

  • No change

 

Summary of Students Who Will Be Changing Schools

  • French Immersion students from the Donagh catchment area will be rezoned to Glen Stewart Primary (K-3) and Stratford Elementary (4-6).
  • Students who live in the Glen Stewart/Stratford/Donagh dual zone will now be rezoned to Donagh for English, and will attend Glen Stewart Primary and Stratford Elementary for Early French Immersion, proceeding to Stonepark (7-9) for Early French Immersion.
  • Students in the West Kent/St. Jean dual zone will be rezoned to West Kent for Early French Immersion and English.
  • Students from the St. Jean zone will be rezoned to West Kent for Early French Immersion.
  • Students in the West Kent/West Royalty dual zone will be rezoned to Spring Park.
  • Early French Immersion students in the area comprising the Prince Street zone will be rezoned to West Kent.
  • Students in the area comprising the Parkdale (downtown) zone will be rezoned to West Kent for Early French Immersion.
  • Intermediate students in the Glen Stewart/Stratford zone will be rezoned to Birchwood for grades 7-9.
  • Intermediate students who live in Hillsborough Development and Hillsborough Village will be rezoned to Stonepark for grades 7 to 9.
  • Intermediate students in the St. Jean (downtown) zone will be rezoned to Queen Charlotte for grades 7-9.
  • Students who live in the West Kent zone will be rezoned to West Kent for Early French Immersion.
  • Students who live in the Parkdale attendance zone will now attend Stonepark Intermediate for grades 7-9.
