Primary Literacy Assessment
Literacy involves the ability to read and understand what is being read, the ability to express and organize ideas in writing using age-appropriate spelling and punctuation skills, and the ability to follow instructions.
The Primary Literacy Assessment measures how well a child is able to perform these skills by the end of Grade 3 which is a key stage of learning. Every Grade 3 student, with the exception of students with special educational needs, participates in the assessment in May.
Student reports are sent to parents the following October. They provide a snapshot of how a child is doing in relation to provincial standards. Parents may want to ask the teacher how their child’s performance on this assessment compares to what the teacher observes in the classroom and how parents can offer additional support at home.
Results of the most recent Primary Literacy Assessment are available through the school board links below. When looking at school results, it is important to consider the total number of students who participated in the assessment, the size of the student population and trends over a period of time.
