School Health
Health and education are strongly connected: healthy students are better learners, and better-educated individuals are healthier. Research shows that comprehensive school health approaches can lead to improvements in children’s academic achievement, as well as in their health and well-being – improving their quality of life and encouraging healthy behaviours that last a lifetime.
The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the Department of Health, the University of Prince Edward Island, school boards, schools, provincial alliances, community organizations, and community volunteers, have been working together to support the health and well-being of Island students. Collaborative efforts have resulted in a wide variety of new and strengthened Comprehensive School Health supports including education opportunities, policy development, programs, and research opportunities.
Provincial curriculum and resources support students in gaining the knowledge, experience, and skills to improve their health and well-being. Formal education in health, physical education, family life education, home economics, and career explorations and opportunities provide students with information and skills which will encourage healthy behaviours that last a lifetime.
