Buffer Zones

A buffer zone is a protected area alongside watercourses and wetlands.  Buffer zones protect Prince Edward Island’s water resources by filtering and assimilating contaminants from surface runoff water.  They provide valuable habitat for many species of wildlife and shade for streams.

Buffer zones have been in place on Prince Edward Island since 1999 and were redesigned in the fall of 2008 in the new Watercourse and Wetland Protection Regulations [PDF Document].  A summary of the requirements for the 2008 redesign of buffer zones are found in the Buffer Zones Fact Sheet.

In some cases, you may need to complete some of the prohibited activities within a buffer zone.  In these situations, you must complete an application for a Buffer Zone Activity Permit.
