Environmental Stewardship Funding Programs

alt tag The Department of Environment, Labour and Justice as well as the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, often in cooperation with other non-governmental partners, offer a number of programs for environmental stewardship work.

Watershed Management Fund strives to improve the Island’s environment by promoting a community-based approach to watershed planning and management.

Following this approach, the various groups (stakeholders) having an interest in a watershed work together when making decisions.  Using this community input, a management plan is then developed to reflect the interests of all residents in the area.

The resulting plan gives the watershed group and community residents a clear plan forward. Environmental issues are raised, corrective actions or strategies are identified, and time-lines and resource requirements are established.

Alternative Land Use Services is a voluntary program for PEI landowners and farmers.  The program protects PEI water, fish and wildlife habitat. The ALUS program will help landowners and farmers reduce soil erosion and siltation of streams, improve water quality and improve and increase wildlife habitat.

Greening Spaces provides funds to schools, communities and community groups for tree and shrub planting programs that provide environmental and educational benefits.

Small Marsh Program works with Island land owners to restore approximately 20 wetlands on PEI each year.  These projects range in size from one to 10 acres in size.  The program sponsors do the work at no cost to participating landowners but the owner must sign an agreement to maintain the restored wetland for a 25-year period.

Wildlife Conservation Fund provides funding for the protection and enhancement of wildlife and wildlife habitats.  Money for the fund comes from a contribution made once a year by each licensed angler, hunter and trapper on PEI.
