Anoxic Estuaries (2002 - 2012)

This is a listing of estuaries where an anoxic event or events (some estuaries have gone anoxic more than once per season) have been confirmed. Anoxia is considered to be present when at least two of the following three criteria have been observed:

milky white or green discoloration of the water,
H₂S or 'rotten turnip' odour, and
low (near zero) dissolved oxygen readings.

A map of anoxic events from 2008 to 2012 is also available.

Please note that the table may not capture every anoxic estuary in PEI for a particular year. Some events may not have not been reported to, or documented by, the Department of Environment, Labour and Justice.
