Working in and around streams, rivers and wetlands

Human activities in or near streams, rivers (watercourses), and wetlands can negatively affect our water resources and the plant and animal life that live there.  Changes made directly to or near these sensitive areas could result in the death of birds, animals or fish.  It could also cause damage to water quality, buildings and property.

A Watercourse, Wetland and Buffer Zone Activity Permit is required prior to starting any work within a watercourse, wetland or buffer zone. Applicants are encouraged to consider the potential environmental impacts of their projects at the planning and design stage.

It is much less expensive and more effective to prevent or minimize the impacts of an activity at the design stage, rather than try to control or mitigate the harmful effects of a poorly planned watercourse, wetland or buffer zone activity, after it has been started or completed.
