Searching for products that are...
Recyclable and Reusable

AS RECYCLING TAKES OFF as an Island wide phenomenon, opportunity exists for budding entrepreneurs to develop products with an environmental integrity. Gaining profit, employing Islanders, and helping to reduce the amount of solid waste produced are all possible when new businesses develop merchandise from recycled and reused material. The following products have been successful in many jurisdictions around the globe:

  1. Pet Litter from Recycled Newspapers
In many instances, clean dry newspapers make excellent kitty litter. They are absorbent and safe for pets since most printing is done with vegetable based inks today.
  2. Construction material from Recycled Silage Wrap
The plastic from clean dry silage wrap can be made into durable wood-like products that are an excellent substitute for chemically treated wood in applications where it comes into contact with soil or water (like fence posts, retaining walls, or patio decks.)
  3. Jewellery from Old Computer Circuit boards
The colourful metallic and plastic components of computer hardware are finding new life as necklaces, pendants, and even earrings. Cottage industries have sprung up with many artists shaping the computer's internal information processors into new external fashion statements.
  4. Egg Cartons and Seedling Trays from used Cardboard
The gray or brown paper used often in egg cartons, coffee trays, and seedling pots is actually made from cardboard that has been repulped and reshaped.
  5. Clothing and Merchandise from Hemp
Hemp is a plant with the capacity to replace many pulp and paper products. Its application in making knapsacks, clothing, wallets, and even CD cases has already been proven to be commercially viable in states like California.
These are just a few of the many products that presently exist and are made from recycled or reused sources. The potential for local industry to create retail from recycling is limited only to the entrepreneur's imagination.
