Private Sewage Disposal Systems
Nearly half of Prince Edward Island homes have on-site wastewater treatment and disposal systems (i.e., septic systems). Household wastewater from the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry is treated by the septic system before being returned to the environment. Systems typically consist of a septic tank and a disposal (or tile) field. The main purpose of the septic tank is to remove the solids, fats, and grease. The disposal field distributes the partially treated wastewater to a large area of permeable soil. The soil completes the final treatment of the wastewater.Resources:
