Definitions

Prescription Drugs:
Drugs that usually require a prescription for sale and are provided to people by a pharmacist following the diagnosis of a medical practitioner. The sale of prescription drugs is controlled in a regulated environment, under provincial pharmacy legislation.

Public Drug Programs:
Drug programs through which the province provides assistance to eligible residents to help pay for specific prescribed drugs and supplies that are eligible for coverage. 

Formulary:
The list of drugs and supplies covered under one or more PEI drug programs and the criteria that must be met for coverage of those drugs and supplies.

Rebate or Professional Allowance:
A percentage off the price of drugs that drug manufacturers pay to pharmacies to have their drugs stocked.
