The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is responsible for the administration of licenses pertaining to processing, buying and peddling under the PEI Fisheries Act Regulations. Fish processing licenses are divided into four categories namely:
- primary processing
- secondary processing
- lobster cookroom (limited to 144 square feet processing area)
- groundfish processing (limited to 750 square feet of processing area)
Fish buying licenses are issued on a species/species group per buying station basis. The six categories are Lobster, Other Crustaceans, Groundfish, Pelagic, Mollusc, and Other Fish. Two fisheries inspection officers are responsible to enforce regulations under the PEI Fish Inspection Act (PDF file), the Fish Inspection Act - Regulations (PDF file) and the PEI Fisheries Act (PDF file).

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries administers the Prince Edward Island Fisheries Act Regulations under which buying licenses are issued.
To purchase fish directly from fishers for resale or processing, it is mandatory to have a valid fish buyers license. These licenses are issued on a per buying station/per species or species group basis.
The categories for buying licenses are:
• Other crustaceans
• Other fish class
Please note: To have a lobster buying license for the opening day of the lobster season, applications must be received by the Department 30 days prior to the opening day of the each lobster season.
Deadline: Area 24 & 26A (spring season) is April 1
Applications received after the April 1 deadline will be processed in accordance with the Fisheries Act Regulations. For further clarification please contact the Department as listed below.
