Rural Action Plan

The Rural Action Plan is the result of a thorough province-wide consultation process with input from 1,200 Islanders. The plan establishes seven broad goals and 40 corresponding actions and, in particular, the following will have a most transformative effect on the future of rural Prince Edward Island:
  • The development of five Rural Action Centres
  • The implementation of Island-wide Rural Broadband
  • Primary Industries will be strengthened by investment in innovation, research and development, agro-environment measures and amendments to legislation in order to improve competitiveness in agriculture, reduce environmental impacts and provide benefits to the aquaculture and tourism industries
  • The provision of increased resources for community-based development
  • The provision of stable funding to Regional Tourism Associations
  • Investments and approaches will be identified that will result in expanded and diversified opportunities in the rural west and rural east regions

Rural Development PEI is a ministerial comRural Action Plan picture of the Kildare River, PEImittee that will implement the 40 actions set out in the Rural Action Plan.  The committee is comprised of all ministers supporting the implementation of the plan and is chaired by the minister responsible for rural development. A committee of deputy ministers will provide senior policy development assistance regarding rural issues on a government-wide basis.  The status of the Rural Action Plan is updated as the 40 measures are initiated, underway, completed or announced.  Rural Development PEI will be rural Islander's first and easiest access point to development programs and support.

These actions require a shared implementation approach by the following six different government departments: Department of Agriculture & Forestry, Department of Environment, Labour & JusticeInnovation & Advanced Learning, Tourism & Culture, Finance, Energy & Municipal Affairs, and Fisheries, Aquaculture, & Rural Development. Accordingly, the government is changing the way that it undertakes rural development.  The implementation of several important parts of the Rural Action Plan is underway and efforts to initiate the other actions commenced in April of 2010. Over its duration, April 2010 to March 2015, the plan will lay a solid foundation upon which future programs and initiatives of benefit to rural Prince Edward Island will be built.
