Provincial Planning Branch
WHAT WE DO
Receiving its mandate from the province's Planning Act, the branch serves as the designated policy centre within government for land use and development on Prince Edward Island. The branch assists public and private individuals and organizations, both within and outside of government, in an effort to achieve sustainable development in the province. General responsibilities include the preparation of management plans for Special Planning Areas, and the approval of subdivisions containing more than five lots. Relevant legislation includes the Planning Act and the Lands Protection Act.

Municipal Affairs
WHAT WE DO
Municipal Affairs serves as a primary liason with municipalities and municipal interest groups on all municipal matters. Municipal Affairs maintains the legislative framework that provides for the existence of municipal government and specifies their duties and powers. It is responsible for providing timely advisory and consulting services on most aspects of administration, operations, governance and municipal land use planning. Relevant legislation includes the Municipalities Act, The Charlottetown Area Municipalities Act, City of Summerside Act, and the Planning Act.

Land Use & Local Governance
WHAT WE DO
The Municipal and Land Use Planning Secretariat has been assigned lead responsibility for implementing the report of the Commission on Land Use and Local Governance which was made public in January 2010. The Secretariat will coordinate internal government efforts in this regard and is responsible for developing and implementing a work plan and public engagement strategy for the 40 recommendations contained in the Commission’s report.
