Types of Public Land on PEI
Natural Areas
The province has designated different areas of Princed Edward Island as Natural Areas. These areas include both public and private lands and may cover an entire property or specific areas within a property. Sites designated as Natural Areas may include those with rare or uncommon plant species, unique geological features, special habitats or habitats that are ecologically fragile and therefore, require additional protection
The Natural Areas sign incorporates the Lady Slipper, PEI's floral emblem. While the Ladyslipper is a forest plant, natural areas include forests, wetlands, sand dunes and other special and unique ecological treasures. For more information on Natural Areas visit the Fish and Wildlife web site.

Ponds and Wetlands
Ponds and Wetlands include natural bodies of water and man-made impoundments and structures. These areas provide critical wetland habitats that support hundreds of species of aquatic plants, insects, fish, amphibians, mammals and invertebrates.
Ponds and wetlands also provide areas for people to enjoy boating, hunting and fishing. They also help to purify and conserve water resources for various human and ecological uses.
The Ponds and Wetlands sign includes freshwater cattails and trout jumping to catch low flying aquatic insects.
Provincial Forests
The Provincial Forest program was the first Division program to adopt the standardized diamond-shaped image used on all lands managed by the Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry. These forests are managed to provide high quality wood and non-timber forest products as well as areas for recreation, land owner, public and youth education, public awareness and long term forest research.
The Provincial Forest sign interior includes the silhouette of a conifer overlaid with the image of a red oak leaf and acorn (PEI's Provincial Tree) on a background of forest green.
Wildlife Management Areas
Wildlife Management Areas are individual properties and blocks of properties established for the purpose of wildlife habitat conservation. WMA's may be public lands or combinations of public and private properties.
To date, there are 17 Wildlife Management Areas on Prince Edward Island and 10 of them are located on publicly owned lands. These lands total some 5,431 hectares (13,420 acres).
The Wildlife Management Area sign includes an osprey, a once threatened species, carrying a fish back to its nest.
Public Land Usage
These four signs are designed to show Islanders where their public lands are and illustrate the primary management philosophy for each property. Signs are erected where the property accesses a public road and unless it is otherwise posted, they are open to public access and various uses. For more information, contact the Forests, Fish and Wildlife Division at (902) 368 6450.
