Game Species Information

Game Species and Populations

Games Surveys:

Fish and Wildlife staff collect data on many different game and non game species. For game species, much of the information comes from surveys of hunters, trappers and anglers and from annual field population surveys and habitat studies. The province publishes the results of these surveys in the Island Game Survey web site.

Upland Game:

While Prince Edward Island does not have large game species such as white-tailed deer, moose or bear, there are hunting opportunities for many small upland game species. The Upland Game web site provides an overview of the Island's most common small game species including information on habitats, hunting seasons and notes of special interest.

Waterfowl:

Prince Edward Island's wealth of streams, ponds, bays and estuaries provide excellent habitats for many waterfowl species such as Canada geese, black ducks and mallards. These birds find abundant shelter and nesting space in natural habitats and many forage for leftover grains in farm fields. The Island Waterfowl web site offers information on habitat requirements, species identification and much more.
