Public Land
Unlike most Canadian provinces, the majority of Prince Edward Island's forest is privately owned. Public lands only account for some 12 per cent of the Island's forest area or some 33,000 hectares. The Forests, Fish and Wildlife Division manages four types of public lands through the Natural Areas, Ponds and Wetlands, Provincial Forests, and Wildlife Management Areas programs. These lands are held as a public trust and managed for public values such as forest health, forest products, enhanced wildlife habitat, public access, recreation, education and long term research.
