Canada-PEI Agriculture Innovation Program

Purpose

The Agriculture Innovation Program was established to provide assistance for innovative projects that will yield positive economic benefits within the Prince Edward Island agricultural industry.

This initiative will provide funds to farmers, groups of farmers, and agri-business supporting investments in primary agriculture which contribute to on-farm profitability and competitiveness.

 

Program Components and Assistance Available

  1. Value Added Opportunities

    The purpose of this sub-program is to promote and accelerate the pre-commercialized development of new products in the agri-food sector.

    50% of eligible expenses to a maximum of $30,000 is available

  2. On Farm Diversification

    Financial support is available to assist with innovative projects which lead to on-farm diversification including new crops, livestock, or alternative uses for agricultural products.

    50% of eligible expenses to a maximum of $20,000 is available

  3. Innovation Technology Evaluation

    Limited financial support is available to evaluate and demonstrate new technologies. Based on 35% of eligible project expenses, applicants will be eligible for a maximum of $30,000. An additional $1,000 may be approved to assist the applicant with evaluation or demonstration costs.

 

Eligible Applicants

Will include primary producers, agriculture industry organizations, and agri-business.

 

Eligible Expenses

Equipment required for the production of a value-added product, transportation costs, monitoring equipment, and materials and supplies.

 

Non-eligible expenses

Salaries and consulting fees, market studies, feasibility studies, business plans, institution overhead and administration costs, and travel.

Preference will be given to projects which add value to raw agricultural products. Eligible technical innovations will be either new, not generally available, or not widely adopted. Only one project supporting a proposed technical innovation in each sector will be funded.

TERMINATION:

This program is effective April 1, 2009, and will terminate on March 31, 2013. The program will be reviewed on an annual basis and may be amended or discontinued without notice by the Minister of Agriculture.
