The Applied Research Sub-Program was established to support the undertaking of short term applied research that will yield economic benefits to the PEI agriculture industry. The objective of research supported under this program is to provide data to develop new production methods or fill information gaps. Projects should obtain statistically sound results that have practical applications which are quickly transferable to primary producers.
ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS
- Agricultural producers
- Provincial agricultural industry organizations, clubs, and associations
- Public & Academic Institutions and Agribusiness
ELIGIBLE ACTIVITIES
Assistance may be provided to carry out applied research in the following areas:
- variety and/or crop research trials that can include yield evaluations, climatic suitability analysis, pest resistance, and improvements in pollination
- crop and livestock development research that will lead to on-farm diversification
- crop and livestock research that will support commercialization of new agri-based products
- pest management research to quantify the extent of specific pest problems and/or to evaluate control measures and reduce pesticide risk
Eligible Expenses:
- salaries
- consulting fees
- equipment rental
- monitoring equipment
- travel
- materials and supplies, and
- analytical laboratory fees.
The eligibility of all expenses is at the discretion of the review committee.
Ineligible Expenses:
- capital equipment purchases
- non arms-length transactions
ASSISTANCE
The Applied Research sub-program will contribute to eligible project costs as identified below.
- Agriculture Industry Associations:
- Funding ranging from 75 to 100%
- Preference will be given to projects that demonstrate industry wide benefits and to first time Applicants
- Maximum program contribution per project is $60,000 for one year projects and $80,000 for multi-year projects
- Agricultural Producers
- Funding up to 50%
- Maximum program contribution per project is $30,000 for one year projects and $40,000 for multi-year projects.
- Public & Academic Institutions and Agribusiness
- Funding up to 25%
- Maximum program contribution per project is $30,000 for one year projects and $40,000 for multi-year projects.
APPLICATION AND APPROVAL PROCESS
Complete the attached Application A: Applied Research form addressing each of the areas provided in the template.
Project submissions will be reviewed at the end of each month. Proposals will be accepted until funds are fully committed.
CLAIMING PROCESS
To be reimbursed, applicants must submit a claim form to the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture and Forestry with invoices and proof of payment, project report and a program evaluation.
