Small Ruminant Enhancement Project (Sheep and Goats)

Resources:

Objectives:

  1. To encourage sheep/goat producers to achieve superior quality genetic stock
  2. To encourage the use of flock/herd health protocols as a method of disease prevention
  3. To implement initiatives which may lead to increased feed efficiency

Funding Levels & Eligible Costs:  

A.   Genetic Enhancement:

  • Assistance will not apply to animals purchased prior to April 1, 2013
  • Qualifying animals must be kept for a minimum of one year unless culled for disease or productivity reasons

Eligible Items will include:
  • Purebred ram or buck
  • Cost associated with artificial insemination
  • Cost associated with genetic testing
  • Genetic evaluation software and training

Levels of assistance:
  • 50% funding on the purchase price for a ram or buck to a maximum of $250
  • 50% funding for eligible items or services listed above

B.    Flock /Herd Health Initiatives:

Eligible items will include:
  • Vaccines
  • Parasite testing
  • Veterinary services for flock/herd health
  • Postmortem at the Atlantic Veterinary College
  • Foot bath
  • Tilt table

Levels of assistance:
  • 50% funding for eligible items or services listed above

C.    Feed Efficiency  Initiatives:

Eligible Items will include:
  • Cost of analysis for feed, water and soil
  • Feed scale
  • Mineral feeder
  • Cost associated with intensive pasture management
  • Ration balance software and training
  • Creep feeder

Levels of assistance:
  • 50% funding for eligible items or services listed above

Funding Requirements:
  1. Must attend a PEI Sheep Breeders’ Association sponsored training session under the required heading of the requested funding
  2. Must have premises identified under the new Premises Identification Regulations
  3. Must be a paid member of the PEI Sheep Breeders’ Association

Funding Process:
  1. Applicants will submit an application for approval
  2. Upon approval, the Applicant will complete and pay for the project
  3. The applicant will complete a claim form, and will be reimbursed after submission of invoices     and proof of payment.
  4. The applicant would be eligible for 50% funding to a maximum of $1000.00 for the life of the program

Application Deadline:  There is no deadline to apply.
