The Vital Statistics Program is a provincial registry program that is responsible for the collection, registration, maintenance and dissemination of vital event information, which includes births, deaths, stillbirths, adoptions, marriages, divorces, and change of name. This information fulfills important registration and certification purposes and provides support to a national and provincial statistical system, both for population information and health information.
Vital Statistics administers the Vital Statistics Act, Marriage Act and Change of Name Act, as well as having responsibilities under the Child Status Act and Adoption Act.
Vital Statistics offices are located at 126 Douses Road, Montague (main office), with a branch office at 16 Garfield Street, Charlottetown.

Historical Overview
Prince Edward Island joined the national system of vital statistics in 1920. However, records were kept prior to this date: 1840, began recording births; 1886, began registration of marriages; 1906, it became mandatory to register births and deaths; 1920, began registration of stillbirths; 1930, began registration of adoptions; 1946, began registration of divorces.
