Chief Public Health Officer's Report and Health Trends 2014

The Office of the Chief Public Health Officer is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Public Health Act and its regulations of Prince Edward Island, supervision of related public health programs, immunization programs, and communicable disease surveillance, prevention, and control. This division is also responsible for the delivery of programs and services in the areas of Population Health Assessment and Surveillance and Environmental Health.

The Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) has the responsibility of monitoring the reportable communicable diseases under the Public Health Act of Prince Edward Island. The office provides direction for contact tracing, investigation, control measures and surveillance of these diseases. In addition, the Office supervises and directs immunization programs in the Province and provides guidelines to those who administer vaccines. The authority to conduct these duties is taken from the Public Health Act and Regulations of Prince Edward Island.

The division has a leadership role in the area of Emergency Health Services, including the development of the Provincial Pandemic Influenza Contingency Plan for the Health Sector.

Environmental Health delivers various programs and services under the PEI Public Health Act and Regulations, the Federal Tobacco Act, and the PEI Tobacco Sales and Access Act and Regulations. The main focus is the enforcement of regulations, education, and illness prevention.

Trends in non-communicable diseases such as cancer and asthma are addressed by the Population Health Assessment and Surveillance Unit in this division.
