Prince Edward Island Wait Times

The PEI health system is committed to improving timely access to services that are priority to its citizens. Federal, Provincial and Territorial governments are working together to set priorities, determine appropriate *benchmarks and *access targets and implement system changes for better access management.
There are various points within the health system that a patient may have to wait for service; they may wait for a visit to a primary provider, to a specialist, for a test or surgery, or for home or long term care. The focus of this strategy is to reduce the time a patient waits for radiation therapy, sight restoration (cataract surgery), hip and knee replacements and for MRI/CT scans.
In 2007 the PEI Department of Health approved the Prince Edward Island Wait Time Strategy: A System That Provides Timely Access to Health Services in Prince Edward Island. It is a strategy focused fundamentally in achieving timely access for its citizens in the four priority areas of radiation therapy, sight restoration (cataract surgery), hip and knee replacements and for MRI/CT scans. Although the main focus of the strategy is on the national priorities, it outlines a process to identify provincial priorities of access.
