Newborn Registration Service

When you register your newborn's birth, you can also apply for your child's Social Insurance Number (SIN). Service Canada and the Prince Edward Island Vital Statistics Division are partnering to offer a simple, secure and convenient way to apply.

Although applying for your child's SIN is optional, a SIN is required for various Government of Canada programs and benefits, including Canada Learning Bond and Canada Education Saving Grant. You must be a Canadian Citizen or hold permanent resident status in Canada and have a Canadian address to use the Newborn Registration Service. If you do not meet the above criteria, you may still be eligible to apply for your child's SIN but you will need to apply directly to Service Canada.

To apply for your child's SIN, you must complete the "Applying for a Social Insurance Number" section on the Statement of Birth form and sign you name. The information will be sent to Service Canada after the birth is registered. Service Canada will then mail you your child's SIN card.

If consent is give to apply for the SIN on the registarion of birth form, the following information will be sent to Service Canada after the child's birth has been registerd with the Province of Prince Edward Island:

  • Birth Registration Number;
  • Child's date of birth and place of birth;
  • Child's full name;
  • Sex of Child;
  • Mailing address and daytime telephone number;
  • Mother's name at birth (given and surname)father's/other parent's full name;
  • Indication of mulitple births - twins, triplets, etc.
This information is sent electronically using security measures that protect your personal information.
