Pride Parade 2017

The Commission celebrated Pride Week by entering a float in the Pride Parade on July 29th.  Our float focused on celebrating Pride Week and promoting our Canada 150 Celebration of Reconciliation event which we have planned to coincide with our Human Rights Day celebrations.
We invited the Mi'kmaq Confederacy to join us and were pleased to have Chief Brian Francis, his wife Georgina and Executive Director Don MacKenzie ride with us on the float driven by Shawn Blanchard of Yesco.  We were also joined by Kathy Archer and Margaret Labobe, two survivors of the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School.

Also on the float were Richard Lush, Keegan Bernard and Caleb Acron dancing in their regalia to indigenous music as we travelled the parade route.  Tom Hilton and Jonathan Greenan (Commission staff), Bethany Toombs (Montague High School Counselor), and Kyla MacKenzie (a member of Montague High’s Gender Sexuality Alliance) walked along the parade route handing out bookmarks and Save-the-Date cards for our Human Rights Day celebration and Canada 150 Celebration of Reconciliation to be held on Monday, December 11, 2017.

Joanne Ings and Lori St. Onge (Commissioners), Brenda Picard (Executive Director), and Kim Dunbar (Summer Student) rode on the float.  Also on the float were Vickie Allen Cooke (DEELC) and BJ McArville and Carolyn Francis (UPEI Faculty of Education), partners in our education work.  MP Sean Casey, Donna Wigmore (bubble maker) and other friends and supporters of the Commission (including Ann Sherman, Gail Rutherford, Kim van Drunen from the Netherlands, and Kyla MacKenzie’s younger sister) also joined in the fun.
