2011-2012 Applications

The 2011-2012 online application (for classes starting after August 1, 2011) is now available.  Please click on the image above to apply.  Paper applications will be available at the Student Financial Services office 
after June 30, 2011.

If your classes start before August 1, 2011 please refer to links in the Applications and Guide Books section below.  

Use our online services to apply for a 2011-2012 student loan or to check the status of your current loan. If you experience technical difficulties please ensure your browser meets the technical requirements.

All applications are processed electronically. If you have questions regarding the application process please consult the 2011-2012 Student Loan Application Guide Book or contact Student Financial Services.

Applications will be available at Island high schools, Access PEI centres, Island post-secondary education institutions or by clicking the links below.

Students who would like to receive funding for both semesters must apply six weeks before the first semester study end date.


For classes starting BEFORE August 1, 2011

Part-time Students


Deadlines:

  • The Pre-Study Report deadline is March 9, 2012 for university or college students attending a traditional two-semester program starting in September 2011 or six weeks prior to the study end date for all other programs.  Your Pre-Study Report should be submitted as soon as your program begins. 
  • To receive loan funding for both semesters in the 2011-2012 academic year, students must submit their application by November 18, 2011.
  • Part-time summer applications must be submitted 3 weeks prior to the study end date of each course.
  • Applications for full-time studies received 12 weeks after the beginning of a program will be asessed for the second term / semester only.
  • Students must submit complete full-time applications 6 weeks prior to the study end date to receive financial assistance.
  • Students must submit Pre-Study Reports 6 weeks prior to the study end date to finalize provincial student loans.
  • Appeal forms must be received by Student Financial Services 6 weeks prior to the study end date. A Pre-Study report must accompany the appeal if it hasn't previously been submitted.

Your application will not be processed until the following required supporting documentation has been received by Student Financial Services.

If you are attending an educational institution outside of the Atlantic Provinces, please have your school complete and return the Academic Information form by fax (902) 368-6144 or mail to Student Financial Services. If you are studying in Atlantic Canada you do not have to send this form.

PEI Government Grants:


Island students enrolled in full-time studies at UPEI, Holland College, Collège Acadie Î.-P-É., or Maritime Christian College may be eligible for bursaries and awards offered by the Government of Prince Edward Island. There is no application for these awards. Student eligibility is determined by the post-secondary institution. These awards will be automatically placed in the student's school account during second semester, 2012.

Please note that students receiving tuition subsidies from any third party agency or government department such as Skills Development, Indian and Northern Affairs, Worker’s Compensation, etc. are not eligible for these awards.  

Awards for the 2011/2012 school year will be available in late January 2012.  The Deadline for appealing the 2010/2011 George Coles, Island Student Awards, and Island Skills Award was August 31, 2011.


George Coles Bursary 2011-2012

Valued at up to $2,000, the George Coles Bursary is available to first time first year Island students who have not attended any previous post-secondary education at any institution. Students must be registered in a full-time program at UPEI, Holland College, Collège Acadie Î.-P.-É., or Maritime Christian College for at least 24 continuous weeks.

George Coles Graduate Scholarship 2011-2012
The George Coles Graduate Scholarship is a scholarship for Island residents graduating from UPEI or Maritime Christian College in their first undergraduate degree.


Island Skills Award 2011-2012

Eligible Island students registered in a full-time program for at least 24 continuous weeks at Holland College or Collège Acadie Î.-P.-É. will receive a $1,000 Island Skills Award in their first, second and *third year of study. Students must be in their first undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate program. 

*the third year award is applicable to three year programs only

Island Student Award 2011-2012

Eligible Island students registered in a full-time program for at least 24 continuous weeks at UPEI or Maritime Christian College will receive $400 in their second year and $600 in their third and fourth year.  

Students must be in their first undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate program.  Students in a second degree, diploma, or certificate program such as Bachelor of Education, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, or a Masters or PhD program are not eligible for an Island Student Award.

Interest Relief Programs

If you are having difficulty making your loan payments, contact Student Financial Services or the National Student Loans Service Centre to discuss interest relief programs available through the governments of Canada and PEI. Loans that are in arrears are not eligible for interest relief programs so it is important to keep your loans in good standing.

Appeals

Students are welcome to appeal student loan award decisions. Appeal forms are available at Student Financial Services or by clicking the links below. Students may appeal the following decisions:

Student Contribution: In order to appeal your student contribution, you must show that you were unable to save the expected amount from your pre-study work period. Reasons for student contribution appeals are listed on the appeal form.

Parental Contribution: Parents must show that they are unable to contribute the expected amount towards the applicant's education because of reasons beyond their control. Unexpected expenses such as car/home repairs and medical bills or a reduced income may be considered for an appeal. Ongoing monthly expenses such as mortgage, loans or utilities are not appeal items because they are included in the Moderate Standard of Living allowance which is used to calculate a student's financial need.

Spousal or Single Parent Contribution: Ongoing monthly expenses such as a mortgage, loans and utilities may be considered for single, married or common-law students.
