Apprenticeship Program

Earn While You Learn!

Apprenticeship is a method of learning the skills and knowledge necessary to become a skilled worker and a certified journey person. Apprenticeship combines on-the-job training under the supervision of a qualified tradesperson and classroom training at a training establishment.  Most apprenticeship programs take two to four years to complete and combine approximately 80 per cent paid-on-the job training with 20 per cent technical/in-school learning - usually at Holland College or an off-Island institute.

Upon completing an apprenticeship program, the apprentice is awarded a Certificate of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification with a Red Seal Endorsement.  In the case of a trade that is not Red Seal, the apprentice is awarded a Certificate of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification with the Blue Seal.  These apprentices are now certified journeypersons of a trade.

Am I eligible to apply for apprenticeship?

In order to enter the apprenticeship program, a person must:

• be at least 16 years of age
• have a high school completion certificate or equivalent *
• be working at a designated skilled career with a suitable employer

*	In the case of someone who does not have a high school completion or equivalent, a conditional agreement may be signed. In this case, the apprentice will have to obtain a General Education Development (GED) before completing their apprenticeship.
