Frequently Asked Questions for Employers


1.      Why should employers support apprenticeship?

To remain competitive, today’s successful companies know that a well trained workforce is a must.  They also realize that to achieve this they will need to become involved in the training process to ensure that it reflects the reality of the workplace and provides their employees with the necessary skills.
Most employers see their involvements in apprenticeship as a logical extension of their business and develop programs and an attitude aimed at helping their employees reach their full potential.
Employers train apprentices to:
  • develop and maintain highly skilled workers
  • increase workplace safety
  • increase product quality, reduce unit cost, and improve company efficiency
  • ensure a steady supply of skilled employers in an aging workforce
  • increase customer satisfaction


2.      What are the responsibilities of the apprentice and the employer?

    Apprentices agree to:
  • work as an apprentice and be trained in the trade or occupation by the employer;
  • show caution and respect for the tools and equipment, goods and property of the employer and avoid any damage or waste of them;
  • show caution and respect for the goods and property of the employer’s  customers;
  • cooperate with the Apprenticeship Training Officer, appointed by the Minister responsible for the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualification Act, in monitoring and recording apprentice’s progress, and in scheduling in-school training; and
  • attend the required in-school training classes for the trade or occupation.

    Employers agree to:
  • accept and train the apprentice in all areas of the trade or occupation so far as the employer’s facilities and availability of work permit;
  • ensure the apprentice is supervised by a journeyperson in the said trade. 
  • permit the apprentice to attend in-school training classes.
  • cooperate with the Apprenticeship Training Officer, appointed by the Minister responsible for the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualification Act, in monitoring and recording apprentice’s progress, and in scheduling in-school training.
               
   

3.      What financial incentives are available to those participating in apprenticeship?


4.      What is the process on PEI to have an trade designated or declared certified compulsory?

A representative from industry may apply through the Provincial Apprenticeship Board to request
that a trade be designated or to request that a designated trade be declared certified compulsory
under the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualification Act and Regulations.
