Hundreds of Islanders attended job fairs this week in Montague and Mill River to talk to employers about work opportunities and potential careers. Job fairs provide a great venue for job seekers to network with employers to secure employment.

“I was pleased to attend the job fair in Montague and see for myself the value of bringing employers and job seekers together to talk about employment opportunities in the province, “said Workforce and Advanced Learning Minister Richard Brown. “ I was very impressed with the positive energy of the job seekers as they talked with employers and the willingness of employers to discuss potential opportunities for work with their companies.”

Atlantic Aqua Farms Partnership, of Orwell Cove had a booth at the job fair. “Our mussel farming and processing business has been growing and our company is constantly looking to attract workers to the aquaculture industry,” said CEO Terry Ennis. “A job fair is a great way to talk to prospective employees, explain what we do and get to know them better.”

The Government of Prince Edward Island is committed to achieving higher levels of employment in the province, using a variety of strategies to match job seekers with employers and to assist Island youth as they make the school to workforce transition.

“I found the job fair very helpful,” said 19-year old Austin Shepard of Cardigan, as he investigated potential job opportunities. Shephard, whose grandfather and great-grandfather were lobster fishers, spoke with representatives of the PEI Fishermen’s Association about becoming a lobster boat crew member this summer.

Additional job fairs are scheduled for the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown on Monday, February 29 and Credit Union Place in Summerside on Tuesday, March 1. Both events run from 2:00–6:00 pm.

Funding for this job fair initiative is provided in whole or in part by the Canada-PEI Labour Market Development Agreement.
