Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to produce moving images of the organs, tissues and blood vessels inside the body. Ultrasound does not use radiation to create images.
Ultrasound scans assess internal organs such as the heart, liver, gallbladder, pancreas and kidneys, as well as blood flow. Ultrasounds can be viewed and captured in real time. This allows for the assessment of the physiology of the organ(s) or vessel(s).
There are many procedures that use ultrasound technology:
- Heart valve function is viewed using an echocardiogram.
- Needle biopsies can be performed using ultrasound.
- Tissue samples are withdrawn for lab analysis.
- A majority of expectant mothers have an ultrasound to assess the devlopment of the fetus. Parents can get their first glimpse of their new baby. Determing the sex of the baby is now available as an option.
The following are ultrasound procedures performed:
- Abdomen ultrasound
- Abdomen and pelvis ultrasound
- Echocardiogram
- Obstetrical ultrasound
- Obstetrical ultrasound 3rd trimester (over 25 weeks gestation)
- Pelvic ultrasound (kidneys)
- Renal ultrasound
- Transrectal ultrasound
