Breast Imaging
A mammogram is an image of the breast. It is most commonly used as a screening tool for early detection of breast disease. Mammograms are recommended once every 2 years after the age of 50.
Screening mammograms do not require a physician's referral, but do require scheduling an appointment with the Diagnostic Imaging (DI) department.
Breast Screening clinics are for women who:
The breast needs to be compressed to obtain an optimal image. This can cause some temporary discomfort.
There are no special preparations required for a mammogram, but you are asked to refrain from wearing deodorant or any powder the day of your scheduled exam.
Screening:
The PEI Breast Screening Program makes early detection of breast cancer available to PEI women.
Diagnostic:
A diagnostic mammogram requires a requisition from a physician. It may be ordered for suspicious fings such as a lump or nipple discharge or as a recommended follow-up from a mammogram screening. Once the requisition has been received by the mammography department, you will contacted with an appointment.
