Motor Vehicle Registration Services
Where can I register my vehicle?- Proof of vehicle ownership is required for registration. Vehicle permit, proof of insurance and motor vehicle inspection report are needed documents. Notice of transfers of ownership must be filed with Highway Safety within 7 days of purchase.
- Vehicle purchased outside province may be registered in Prince Edward Island prior to entry, and clearance from customs must be presented with application for registration if vehicle is purchased or previously registered in a foreign country.
- Nonresidents must register vehicle in Prince Edward Island after four months on reciprocal basis. Plates must be purchased within 10 days if employment is obtained.
- The toll-free number can only be used within Prince Edward Island. Island residents who are out of province and must register their vehicle on PEI can use either the on-line registration service or phone any of the Access PEI sites.
Registering a Vehicle Imported from the United States
When registering a vehicle imported from the US in PEI, the vehicle will be exempt from sales tax if:
- the person must have resided outside of PEI for not less than 6 consecutive months;
- the vehicle must have been owned by the person for at least 30 days prior to taking up residence in PEI; and
- no customs duties were collected on the vehicle at the Canada-US border.
In order to bring goods into the Province as tax exempt the individual must establish permanent residency. Summer residence may not register vehicles as tax free.
Collection of GST only at the border will not affect the exemption.
