Walter Patterson (1742-1789) Monument

Located in Fort Amherst Visitor Centre. Patterson, a soldier and Island landholder was appointed first Governor of St. John's Island (PEI) in 1769. Despite the problems of administering a small scattered society he established a government and attempted to force the Island's proprietors to honour their settlement and quit rent obligations. The struggle came to dominate his regime and created factions opposed to the Governor. His dedication to the development of the Island was offset by personal and administrative indiscretions which eventually led to his dismissal in 1787. Financially ruined and discredited he died in England.
