Sir Louis Henry Davies Monument

Louis Henry Davies was born in Charlottetown May 4 1845. He was a lawyer, member of the Legislative Assembly from 1872-79 (premier for the last three years of that period), member of the House of Commons from 1882-1901 and Minister of Marine and Fisheries in 1896.

He was central to the creation of the public, non-sectarian school system in the province and land ownership reform.

Knighted by Queen Victoria in 1897, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1901 and became Chief Justice in 1918. To this day he remains the only Prince Edward Islander to have served on the Supreme Court.
