George Coles Monument

A Father of Confederation who initially supported the idea but changed his position after the Quebec Conferences failed to address the absentee landlord question that had plagued Islanders for decades. He was Premier of Prince Edward Island three times (1851-54, 1855-59, 1867-69). Born in Charlottetown, September 20, 1810 he also died in Charlottetown, August 21, 1875. He is buried at the St. Peter's Cemetery. The grave is marked by the Government of Canada.
