Lighthouses

There is a lighthouse built onto the Administrative building at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans wharf in Charlottetown (formerly the Coast Guard Wharf). It is located behind the CP Hotel at the foot of Queen Street. Although it has a light in it, it is not an official lighthouse. It has no List of Lights Number and is only cosmetic. Around the Island there are many ornamental lighthouses large and small. They have no significance to navigation and are not relevant to this list.

The question arises as to what constitutes a lighthouse. Some will say a range light is not a true lighthouse. The range lights are identified; you, the viewer can decide whether or not they qualify and decide which lights you want to visit. This list includes any enclosed structures.

Please observe and respect private property where noted. Please be careful around the shore; stay away from high banks (Cape Bear, eg.) or treacherous rocks (Cape Tryon). Harbour entrances (runs) bordered by two breakwaters can carry a fast current with tidal action. Do not swim in or around them and do not fall in. Confine your water activities to the supervised areas.
