Overview
Through the Canada-Prince Edward Island Labour Market Agreement (LMA), the Province has established the Public Internship Program to provide recent graduates with employment experience and skill enhancement to better position them to secure future employment.
These internship placements will provide participants with a work experience within a provincial government department related to their skills and education, and enable the participants to successfully transition into the labour force. It is anticipated that there will be 50 internship placements with the province and each work term will be for 52 weeks.
Goals of the Program
- Provide recent graduates with PEI career opportunities
- Increase retention of young people in PEI
- Develop potential future employees for PEI employers
- Support Government’s efforts in modernizing the public service
Key aspects
Interns will:
- be given meaningful work experiences
- work in provincial government departments
- be matched with appropriate mentors
- receive training and development opportunities
- develop performance development plans
Eligibility
Applicants must have completed post secondary education in a diploma or degree program within the last 5 years and be seeking a focused work term experience.

The program supports the values of workplace diversity and employment equity and encourages applications from people of Aboriginal ancestry, persons with a disability, members of a visible minority, and women and men in non-traditional areas. In addition, bilingualism is considered an asset, but not a requirement. While this program is not restricted to people currently living on PEI, moving or in-person interview expenses will not be provided.
Wage
$19 per hour, 37.5 hour work week

There will be placements available in all government departments and they will be in a variety of areas and locations.

All applications must be submitted by 4 pm, Friday, September 18, 2009.
There will be approximately 50 internship placements made with intakes beginning in November 2009. All interns will be engaged in placements by January 2010. Each internship placement will last 52 weeks.
Candidates will be considered for placements that match their backgrounds. Final selection will be based on their education, interview, testing, referencing and availability. Depending upon the area of work, successful interns may be asked to provide a criminal record check.
