The Nurse Supervisor provides strong leadership, guidance and support to nursing staff to ensure safe, quality, patient-centered care on all shifts. The Nurse Supervisor coordinates services, utilization, staffing, and equipment at the hospital and maintains a high level of clinical and professional competency.
Duties will include:
- coordinating total staffing assignments through liaison with the nurse in charge in each area on a short term basis, reassigning staff from one unit to another as necessary, calling in casual staff as needed, contacting private duty nurses as requested, providing coverage for absent nursing staff in an appropriate manner, and assigning float pool nursing staff appropriately;
- working with the nurse in charge in each area in auditing the quality and quantity of nursing care;
- communicating closely with the Associate Director of Nursing - Clinical Services regarding daily care assessments and individual staff performance assessments, making recommendations regarding alternate assignments and staffing when applicable;
- responding to and providing leadership in emergency situations and code situations, and reporting her/his actions to appropriate authorities;
- serves as advisor and resource person for the nursing units with regards to changes in patient care requirements, problem solving, unusual incidents in patient care, and arranging transfer of patients to another unit or facility for alternate care;
- performing specific procedures according to hospital policy including IV therapy, IV medication administration, blood transfusions, venipuncture, accessing port-o-caths, Hickman catheters, central lines and ECG’s during non-regular hours;
- access and provide medications to nursing units when hospital pharmacy closed;
- providing nursing coverage during peak periods;
- representing the Associate and Director of Nursing during non-regular hours, and represents the Nursing Department to medical staff, other hospital departments, patients, visitors, and to the community in general.
Bi-Weekly Hours: on demand / Rotating
Qualifications:
- Applicants must have current registration with the Association of Nurses of Prince Edward Island and several years progressive hospital based nursing experience.
- Applicants must have a Baccalaureate Degree in nursing.
- Applicants with a Diploma in Nursing supplemented by the Nursing Leadership Management program (or equivalent program of study) and /or extensive supervisory experience will be considered.
- Knowledge of current trends and standards of nursing practice with a vision for the future direction of nursing, demonstrated leadership abilities and strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
- Applicants must have a good previous work and attendance record.
- The successful applicant must provide a satisfactory criminal records check prior to beginning employment.
