Coordinator, Vaccine Preventable Disease and Immunization Program

Reporting to the Administrator of the Chief Public Health Office, the Coordinator for Vaccine Preventable Disease (VPD) and Immunization Programs works directly with the Chief Public Health Officer to support the Division's mandate to promote and provide immunization programs and to ensure control and management of VPD in accordance with The Public Health Act.
Duties will include:
- establishing and maintaining policies and standards for vaccine preventable diseases and immunization programs in the province; facilitating the development, implementation, and evaluation of provincial vaccine preventable disease and immunization programs;
- providing high level advice and expertise on VPD and immunization programs; contributing expertise to the preparation of funding proposals for new and existing programs;
- providing relevant and current educational material, information and in-services to various groups of staff in multiple work site settings in the implementation and management of these programs;
- ensuring quality and accuracy of immunization and VPD data in partnership with key collectors and contributors;
- receiving requests and approving and arranging for immunization under special circumstances; coordinating seasonal influenza vaccine program with department and divisional staff, physicians, and staff in Health PEI;
- providing guidelines for transfer and storage of vaccines and advising health care practitioners throughout the province;
- coordinating Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) reporting system for vaccine associated adverse events and conveying to the Chief Public Health Officer and national reporting system.
- ensuring that the provincial stock of vaccine and immune globulin is current and sufficient; coordinating distribution of limited vaccine supply between appropriate worksites.
- responding to emergency and outbreak situations by planning, conducting, implementing and monitoring response.
- planning and organizing outreach activities to ensure better understanding and awareness with regard to existing and emerging issues and new program initiatives.
- providing 24/7 after hour on-call coverage relative to nursing team responsibilities and notifiable diseases covered by the Public Health Act.
- attending and contributing to weekly briefing and planning meetings with the CPHO team.
- partnering with Divisional, Departmental and Health PEI staff, Department of Education, Office of Attorney General, schools, non-governmental organizations and the community in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating programs and health promotion strategies aimed at improving health outcomes for residents of Prince Edward Island.
- participating in research projects through provision of direction to project staff, submission to the Research Ethics Board, development of protocol, organization of site visits, development of tools, and education of staff and public.
- advising on strategies and innovative solutions that will mitigate future Public Health risks.
Qualifications :
- Must have a degree in Nursing; a Master's degree would be considered an asset.
- Eligible for registration with Association of Registered Nurses of PEI.
- Extensive experience in Public Health and/or Community Nursing; must have supervisory experience.
- Experience in vaccine preventable diseases and immunization programs, disease control and management, and Public Health legislation; experience in policy development and implementation.
- Excellent communication (interpersonal and writing) skills.
- Strong organizational, analytical and decision-making ability; project management skills.
- Proven leadership skills, ability to build and maintain working relationships and strategic partnerships.
- The successful applicant must provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check prior to beginning employment.
- Relevant certifications will be considered an asset (some may be required within one year of hire).
- Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
